First to come to eye, when I opened the door today, was a newly-opened poppy, delicately shaded white to orangey-pink to red at the edge. This is also the day we dig the holes for the fence that will replace the one that fell apart with age and wind.

A hundred years ago (December 17, 1903) the Wright brothers succeeded in the first powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine; they called their plane the Wright Flyer. The plane was constructed of spruce and ash, the wings were covered with muslin and cables held them in place. The two brothers designed the engine themselves.
